Bishop’s School honors top athletes
More than 400 parents and student-athletes representing The Bishop’s School fall sports teams attended the recent 2006 Fall Sports Banquet held in the Eva May Fleet Athletic Center.
Highlighting the event was the presentation of the Knights of the Roundtable medals to the varsity athlete from each sport who, in the eyes of his or her teammates, consistently provided the highest inspiration, leadership, loyalty, dependability and sportsmanship during the 2006 fall season.
The winners included: Elizabeth Mills ’07, (girls’ cross country), Stephen Bardin ’07 (boys’ cross country), Andrey Artamonov ’07 (water polo), Nicole Ballon-Landa ’07 (volleyball), Jackie Schulze ’07 (tennis), Riley Sexton ’07 (field hockey), Anne Williams ’09 (golf) and Tommy Wornham ’08 (football).
The names of these eight new Knights will be engraved, along their peers from the winter and spring seasons, on the 2006″”2007 Roundtable sword.
Viking JV cagers win trio
After opening the week by losing to Westview 47-10, the La Jolla High junior varsity girls basketball team bounced back to win three straight games and even their record at 3-3.
The Lady Vikings traveled to Julian and defeated the host Lady Eagles, 55-29. All 11 players reached the scoring column, led by a 15-point effort from Caitlin Turner. Deniz Kaplan had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Mika Marsh was the defensive stopper with seven steals.
La Jolla came from behind and overcame a poor shooting first half to defeat Mission Hills 19-17. Turner hit the winning basket with 15 seconds left for the win. Lisa Fronek was the leader on the court as she had five points, six rebounds, five steals, and four blocked shots.
The Lady Vikings finished the week with a 32-24 victory over Crawford. Kaplan and Turner led the offense again with 10 and 9 points, respectively. Kelli Costelloe had six rebounds, five steals and two assists.
“I’m very proud of how the girls played this week,” La Jolla Coach Gary Frank said. “We showed that we can play very good defense, and that we can score points when we need to. We have improved a lot over the first month of the season.”
