Study says Mission Bay Landfill not leaking
District 6 Councilwoman Donna Frye announced the results to the four-year study of the Mission Bay Landfill, concluding that there is no significant discharge of contaminants into the water.
The study was conducted by the Mission Bay Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), which was made up of landfill technical experts and community members.
The report also found unevaluated locations or materials buried in steel drums may be releasing remains and that the landfill cap is very thin in the eastern part of the landfill. This increases the chances of landfill gases being discharged into the air.
TAC is recommending additional soil be added to the eastern area and future construction in the area be limited, along with ongoing monitoring.
The landfill was operated by the city from 1952 through 1959, and was filled with solid waste and as much as 2.2 million gallons of liquid industrial waste.
La Jolla history receives new blood
After recently naming a new executive director, John Bolthouse, La Jolla Historical Society (LJHS), 7446 Eads Ave., has also selected Kara West to serve as its part-time archivist.
“I recently finished my master’s degree and this job was right up my alley. I definitely have a connection to the community and to this history, and it is such an exciting place to work,” West said. “We are really in a transition phase of growing and are prepared to get more involved with the community.”
The changes at LJHS include a change of venue when the organization moves to its new location in the historic Wisteria Cottage. New programs, more exhibitions and more education outreach will be a focus once the move is made.
“I have a lot of duties, primarily to maintain control of the collection. I have been working on auditing the collection to find out exactly what we have in terms of the archive,” she said. “I have been trying to work on a plan so that users can view this wonderful collection on the history of La Jolla.”
The society expanded its hours as of Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mama’s Pie not a typical bake sale
Now in its second year, Mama’s Pie In The Sky bake sale is aiming to sell 5,000 pies and raise a lot of dough ” $100,000 this go-around.
The money generated from pies made by San Diego’s top bakers, caterers and chefs, including the Sycuan Resort and Casino and The French Gourmet, directly funds thousands of free, hot nutritious meals to those living with HIV/AIDS or other critical illnesses in the community.
Mama’s Pie offers pecan, pumpkin, apple and sugar-free apple pies for sale through Nov. 15, for $20 each. Pies are available for pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving. More than 30 sites around the county offer ordering and pickup. In the La Jolla area, pick-up sites include Wells Fargo banks at 7714 Girard Ave. and 4315 La Jolla Village Drive.
The pie sales help to curb the reduction in funding from the federal government. In recent years, Ryan White AIDS funding has been reduced from 30 percent of the organization’s annual budget to its current 17 percent.
