San Diego Wave forward Alex Morgan was named to the FIFA FIFPRO World 11 team for the sixth time on Monday after helping lead her team to the NWSL Supporters’ Shield last season. She previously won the award in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2022, the same year she led the league in scoring with 16 goals overall.
“Incredible group of players,” Morgan tweeted after the announcement. “Honored to be selected amongst them.”
The FIFA FIFPRO World 11 are annual awards depicting the best footballers in the current game as voted by the players themselves with over 28,000 professional footballers taking part in the 2023 team selections. The two-time World Cup winner was destined for greatness early on making her first appearance with the USWNT U-20 team during the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s
U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico, scoring her first international goal against Cuba. Morgan was then named to the United States U-20 team that competed in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile, scoring four goals in the tournament against France, Argentina, and North Korea while helping lead the Stars and Stripes to the championship.
Morgan joined the San Diego Wave on Dec. 13, 2021, after the team announced her signing from a trade with the Orlando Pride. The terms were revealed three days later following the opening of the trade window with Orlando receiving a record $275,000 in allocation money and Angharad James in return. The 34-year-old native of San Dimas enters her third season playing forward for the San Diego Wave in hopes of leading the team to the NWSL championship, which was won by Gotham FC last November at Snapdragon Stadium thanks to a dramatic 1-0 victory over OL Reign.
