Million-dollar views, an oceanfront location, and the OB spirit are just a few reasons why locals and out-of-towners alike are all in on the Inn at Sunset Cliffs.
Perched on the bluffs at 1370 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. offering sunset views to die for, the inn is one of only a few San Diego hotels truly located on the Pacific Ocean. The 24-room inn, accommodating up to 105 guests, originally built in 1953, was updated in 2018.
Designed after Santorini, an island in Greece, the Inn at Sunset Cliffs is an island in itself creating a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere accommodating any San Diego visitor.
The quiet, privately owned inn is the kind of place patrons come back to over and over. “We’ve had people who’ve been coming here since they were little kids, and they have had kids, and ‘their’ kids are now coming and staying at the hotel,” said Gavin Fleming, hotel general manager and CEO who added, “It’s one of the most romantic locations in San Diego. I got married there myself.”
And Fleming, the inn’s steward for the past 17 years, has taken full advantage of its location renting the establishment out to host “destination” weddings, parties, and a slew of other special events. “We do long- and short-term rentals,” noted Fleming. “Whatever we can accommodate – we’re all for.”
A first for car-enthusiast Fleming and the inn was last September’s inaugural full auto show, hosted at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Point Loma in the church parking lot and the street along Point Loma Boulevard. The free show featured everything from Lamborghini to trucks on hand for public viewing.
“I had been planning this car show for 10 years,” said Fleming adding, “My goal is to have this be an event we do for the next 50 years.” This year, Fleming said sponsors will be partnering with Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, the community’s business improvement district, to make the event bigger and better. “We’ll have a kid’s zone, an awards ceremony, food trucks, and live music,” he added. “We’re hoping to keep it local with local car owners having priority rather than VIP guests.”
Sunsets are a big deal at the Inn at Sunset Cliffs. “We encourage all our guests to come out and gather during the sunset as this is ‘the’ place for sunsets,” noted Fleming. “We have some of the best in the world. I can vouch for that.”
Fleming targets, and gets, lots of guests from Europe, as well as those from Canada, along with the Arizona folks heading west to beat the summer heat.
The Inn also prides itself on being environmentally friendly, with plans including going solar.
Whatever Fleming has done to improve the Inn at Sunset Cliffs has worked. “Eighty percent of our hotel guests are returners,” he confided. “Many of the same people come back year after year. And some have been doing it for 60 years.”
“We’re one of San Diego’s best-kept secrets,” Fleming concluded.
