The Luminosity Steering Committee, organizers of the Ocean Beach Fourth of July Drone Light Show, has announced the postponement of the 2024 event. This decision stems from bureaucratic hurdles and financial limitations, despite the resounding success and positive community reception of last year’s spectacle.
“It is with great regret that we’ve had to make this decision to postpone,” said Mike James, co-founder and co-chair of Luminosity.
In 1980, during his tenure as president of what is now the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, James proposed the sponsorship of the Fourth of July fireworks off the Ocean Beach Pier. In 2022, following the end of the annual tradition due to structural damage to the pier and the absence of a suitable alternative launch site, James spearheaded the formation of Luminosity.
The Ocean Beach Drone Light Show gained national attention last year as communities across the United States seek environmentally-friendly alternatives. “The committee and I are proud of our achievements. Now, we plan to regroup and prepare for the future,” James said.
The committee has announced plans for the next Luminosity event, slated for Saturday, July 4, 2026, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “We are thrilled to participate in our nation’s Semiquincentennial celebration. With a two-year planning window, we can secure funding and permits to ensure a spectacular event,” James said.
