When Michelle Irwin moved on as principal at Patrick Henry High School early last summer, it was not clear how long it would take get her replacement in position to oversee the school.
While it may have taken a little longer than some liked or expected, PHHS students, staff, parents and alumni have their new principal in place.
Sandra White, who had been at Valhalla High School dating back to 2006 as a school counselor and later assistant principal, is settling into her new job as principal at Patrick Henry. The Alabama native who also has taught as an Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University and Cuyamaca College, began her new job on March 4.
Mensajero de Mission Times caught up recently with White to discuss her new role, how she likes being a Patriot and more.
MTC: What attracted you to the job when it came open?
White: The attraction was first to the district. I was desiring a change from my former district. When I saw the PHHS posting, I began researching the school and even came to campus with my daughter, who was coaching middle school track then and was impressed with the campus. The amount of programs that are offered to students is impressive as well. There is something for everyone. I must say I also look fabulous in green.
MTC: Coming into the job, what did you know about Patrick Henry High School, and what did you want to learn about it, etc.?
White: I know the school is a staple in the community, that the mascot is a Patriot, that the student population is diverse. I wanted to learn about the staff and the community.
MTC: What in general, do you see to be the biggest challenges in being a principal at a high school in today’s world? Things such as technology, security, student and staff needs etc.
White: The biggest challenge is competing with technology. Technology is a useful resource that can be damaging when not used properly. Our students are inundated with instant access that is extremely distracting and can be socially hindering social skills.
MTC: What kind of reception have you received on campus from students, staff, parents etc.?
White: The reception has been welcoming by all I have come in contact with. I am connecting with the staff and students daily, and I hope to add the parent connection soon.
MTC: With this school year winding down, what goals would you say you have for PHHS going into the 2024-25 school year?
White: The first goal will be to have a great start to the school year with staff and students returning from summer rest ready to tackle the new school year. This will also involve continuing my quest to learn about the staff, students, parents, and community. Learning what Henry looks and feels like in the fall.
MTC: What is one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
White: I enjoy quiet alone time and consider myself to be an extroverted introvert. I diagnosed myself, lol. I also love a good laugh.
