The restaurant space that was formerly Fat Fish has been transformed by new owners into Hideaway Pacific Beach, a new SoCal lifestyle-inspired restaurant/bar lounge.
A grand opening for Hideaway will take place Thursday, June 20 from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. at 4474 Mission Blvd. Local celebrities including Surfing Hall of Fame inductees will be in attendance to celebrate the opening, fueled by live DJs and fun giveaways.
Inspired by the laid-back surf and skate culture, vibrant music scene, and relaxed beach lifestyle that makes PB a favored destination, this new hangout is designed to serve as a second home where every guest is treated like a local.
“We’ve had the place for a little over a year and we took what was a Mexican restaurant in that building replacing Fat Fish and transforming it into a beach-bungalow feel,” said Greg Newman, president/CEO of Baja Sharkeez, the Newport Beach-based restaurant group owning Hideaway. “We studied the old American Craftsman look of PB with its beach bungalows originally built back in the ’20s. We wanted to bring back a nostalgic vibe.”
Just steps from Crystal Pier, the new restaurant venue offers an inviting atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. Providing a unique alternative to traditional bars, Hideaway acts as an extension of home, with a relaxed ambiance and stylish retro decor offering a perfect space for every mood.
“We’re creating a space where locals can come together and feel like they’re hanging out at their house party, where every room is crafted to evoke the spirit of Pacific Beach,” said Newman. “We’re making Hideaway the ultimate beachside spot for intimate meetings by the fireplace, cozy corners for large groups, quick seating on the patio after surf and skate sessions, and evening transitions into a lively house party mood.”

Guests can enjoy a variety of seating options in the 5,500-square-foot restaurant, featuring cozy indoor lounges and outdoor open-air bars, as well as wrap-around flame-lit patios with California-inspired spins on American classics.
The elevated food menu will consist of a variety of shareable bar bites, wood-fired pizzas from Hideaway’s pizza bar, sandwiches, and burgers, as well as more sophisticated options, such as Aguachile Halibut Sashimi and 12-Hour Braised Short Rib.
Hideaway will also feature two full-service bars featuring a variety of handcrafted specialty cocktails bringing the iconic shareable “Social Bowls,” spirits, wine, and 30 local brews on tap.
Newman noted he “did his homework” in interviewing locals to find out what was needed in a new restaurant/bar that would capture the spirit of the beach community. “We talked to people who grew up in PB – surfers, skaters, spear fisherman,” he said adding Hideaway will have, as part of its décor, not random beach photos but those of local surfing legends, the art he said that “actually means something.”
Of Hideaway’s food menu, Newman said: “We have a wood-fired pizza oven that people can sit around and watch pizzas being made, and the crust and everything is made from scratch. We’ll also have a Hideaway burger that everyone will love as well as lobster rolls and spaghetti and meatballs.”
Newman also wants Hideaway to appeal to every PB demographic. “We want to cater to people in their 40s to 60s, as well as young professionals ages 21 to 35 as well as the nightclub crowd. We’re trying to be all of it,” he concluded.
