A lawyer for a Pacific Beach armed robbery suspect sought to lower his $575,000 bail on July 30 only to have the judge change it to no bail after hearing the prosecutor describe the facts in the case.
Attorney Gregory Garrison said his client, Anthony Caleb Johnson, 22, has a job and his employer sent a letter that was read by San Diego Superior Court Judge John Pro.
Garrison asked that bail be lowered to $270,000, saying his client posed no danger, and the firearm used in the robberies was not loaded. “Mr. Johnson is not a flight risk,” said Garrison.
Deputy District Attorney Malik Behrouznami said Johnson approached two men at 2:07 a.m. in the 4500 block of Mission Boulevard near Garnet Street while they were waiting for an Uber ride on July 10. Johnson stuck a firearm out of a window and robbed them at gunpoint, the prosecutor said.
Johnson then allegedly robbed two 7-Eleven stores on Clairemont Drive and Clairemont Mesa Drive, said Behrouznami. The final hold-up occurred at 3 a.m. at a 7-Eleven store in El Cajon.
Johnson has tattoos on his face which was noted by the Pacific Beach victims, said Behrouznami. Police arrested Johnson on July 15 after investigators obtained the getaway vehicle’s license plate number and entered into the license plate recognition system, which showed the vehicle was in the area of all four robberies.
“These are violent crimes. He has no regard for others,” said Behrouznami. “The defendant does pose a threat and does continue to be a threat.”
The judge agreed with the prosecutor, saying there was “a likelihood of potential harm.” Pro added that Johnson has a prior juvenile conviction in which he used a gun in 2018. “These are serious armed robberies,” said Pro.
Johnson has pleaded not guilty. His preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 23. He remains in the South Bay Detention Facility.
