After a busy summer, we were ready to welcome students back to campus.
We have started a tradition of making the first two days back to school “Welcome Back Days.” We use these days to focus on connecting students to staff and peers, building community and culture, reigniting school spirit and making all students feel welcome and safe. Students attend their classes, but the bell schedule will be shortened which will allow for the last two hours of each day to be filled with fun activities where students can meet each other and discover campus.

Thursday afternoon (Aug. 8) was a time for students to discover the different clubs we offer on campus and take care of errands. Friday afternoon (Aug. 9) was our ASPIRE kickoff party.
ASPIRE programs are made possible through a grant we get from the SDCOE, which allows Helix to offer high quality before and after school clubs free of charge. These clubs include Dungeons & Dragons, Yoga, Gaming, Sand Volleyball, Podcasting and much more. Club leaders were available to talk to students about the different clubs at the kickoff party and help them sign up. We also had activities and games all over campus. It was a great way to kick off the school year.
Back to School Night was held recently and Parent/Guardian Shadow Day is on Wednesday, Aug. 28. We are also holding our Mid High School Reflections (MHSR) project on Wednesday, Aug. 28 & Thursday, Aug. 29 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
MHSR is a project that all 11th graders must participate in. They prepare a powerpoint about their high school experience so far and their goals moving forward and present it to a panel made up of teachers, staff members, parents, guardians, extended family and community members.
We love to have community members join us as audience members for these presentations. If you would like to participate as an audience member, please visit our homepage at helixcharter.net for a link to the RSVP form.
