San Diego FC will select up to five players in the 2024 MLS Expansion Draft on Wednesday night with a live viewing party being held at Eighteen Threads in Mission Valley. Here are three players to keep an eye out as possible selections for SDFC, which kicks off its inaugural MLS season against the MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy in late February.
Miguel Berry: The 27-year-old former San Diego Loyal standout was born in Barcelona, Spain to American parents After moving back to the United States when Berry was 8 years old, the young talent grew up in Poway, attending Poway High School. Berry also played with the Development Academy side San Diego Surf until 2016, having previously played for San Diego SC. In 2016, Berry went on to play college soccer at the University of San Diego competing with the Toreros for four years, making 72 appearances, scoring 38 goals, and tallying 16 assists. In his senior year, Berry was named the WCC Co-Player of the Year and a semifinalist for the MAC National Player of the Year award. Berry made 31 appearances with the LA Galaxy in 2024 on their way to the championship.
Alan Pulido: The 33-year-old Mexican professional footballer plays as a striker for Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City. Pulido started his career with Tigres UANL in 2010. Pulido joined Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City for another record fee of US$9.5 million. Pulido represented the under-20, under-23, and senior Mexico national teams. He was called up to participate in the 2011 Copa América, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In April 2017 he helped lead Guadalajara to the Clausura Copa MX final against Monarcas Morelia after defeating them in a penalty shoot-out in which he scored. The following month his team won the Clausura championship was disputed against his former club Tigres. On April 17, 2018, during the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League finals against Major League Soccer club Toronto FC, Pulido scored from a free kick, helping Guadalajara attain a 2–1 victory — the goal was named Goal of the Tournament. Pulido represented the under-20, under-23, and senior Mexico national teams and was called to participate in the 2011 Copa América, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Hector Herrera (above): The 34-year-old Mexican professional footballer who most recently played as a midfielder for Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo. Herrera began his career with Pachuca in 2011 and spent three years at the club, before joining FC Porto. He struggled for playing time in his first season in Portugal before gradually cementing his place in the starting eleven. Starting from the 2015–16 season, Herrera served as club captain. In his six years with Porto, Herrera made 245 appearances across all competitions, winning a Primeira Liga and two Supertaça titles. A full international since 2012, Herrera won the Olympic gold medal in that year’s football tournament and was part of Mexico’s winning team at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He has represented his country at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2013 and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, and the Copa América Centenario.
