On Sunday, Feb. 23, crews began nighttime work along University Avenue between 10th Avenue and Normal Street en Hillcrest.
This work will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. and is necessary for crews to safely prepare the work area for construction of the future Eastern Hillcrest Bikeways.
During work hours, people driving can expect intermittent lane closures along University Avenue in both eastbound and westbound directions. Signage and detours will be in place to guide travelers through the work area.
How might this affect you?

Nearby residents, businesses, and travelers can expect intermittent noise (including Cal/OSHA-required back-up alarms), dust, and lights as our crews complete this work. Crews will take steps to minimize the impact of construction activities whenever possible.

Follow all posted signage and detours. You are encouraged to plan accordingly and be Work Zone Alert in the construction area.

The Eastern Hillcrest Bikeways project consists of roughly 1.1 miles of bikeways in the Hillcrest community of San Diego.
This project will reportedly improve access to businesses in the area and will provide a new gathering space for the community, the Pride Promenade, which is being developed jointly with the City of San Diego. The bikeway will serve as a vital connection point to the rest of the regional bike network. It also includes major underground work and street improvements and is expected to be complete in late 2026.
