Wanda Honeycutt, an artist and resident of San Carlos, has once again won the Best of Theme award in the highly competitive March 2025 San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) Member’s exhibition “Nature’s Alchemy”, an in-gallery show of the SDWS in Liberty Station.
Honeycutt’s painting titled “Canyon Dreams” was selected by prominent San Diego artist Kathleen Scoggin for this honor, out of más que 270 entries.
Scoggin said of the painting, “This is an abstracted landscape, which appeals to me personally. I selected it for the theme because of the gold, since the meaning of alchemy is changing other metals into gold. It also means more generally a transformation or a change. I see a lot of that in this painting. I love the abstractedness in it. Also unusual is the overall shape of the painting that fits the subject matter so well.”
Honeycutt’s paintings have frequently garnered awards in a number of shows in the region.
For this piece, Honeycutt was inspired by a trip she and her husband took to Utah’s Bryce and Zion national parks. She found that the majestic beauty of the sun glazed rock formations in the canyons touched her heart as well as fueling her creative fire. In these natural settings, she muses, one can almost hear the drumbeats and sense the life force energy of the Native Americans who once inhabited the region. There is a spiritual essence to the place that is unique and not of the ordinary. Honeycutt created this painting with the hope that it is able, in a small way, to capture that magic.
