The man who angrily left a hot tub at Campland on the Bay RV Resort in Pacific Beach and returned with a firearm was sentenced on April 22 to 25 years to life in state prison for second-degree murder.
Michael Lawrence Callahan, 40, apologized to the six children of Ryan Abbott, 49, who was shot and killed after Abbott tried to de-escalate the situation on May 16, 2023.
A nine-man, three-woman jury convicted Callahan of second-degree murder on Feb. 28 in the death of Abbott, of Pacific Beach. They also convicted him of personally discharging a firearm.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Lisa Rodriguez imposed 15 years to life in prison for second-degree murder and added 10 years for the use of a gun in a homicide.
Deputy District Attorney Jessica Sutterley said Callahan will have to serve 85% of the 25-year sentence before he can be eligible for parole. Rodriguez gave him credit of 707 days in jail already served.
Trial witnesses said a woman in the hot tub was quite intoxicated and Callahan had been flirting with the woman. When Callahan went to his motorhome, another woman called the intoxicated woman’s friend, who showed up and took the woman home.
This angered Callahan, who got into an argument with the remaining woman when he returned. He went back to his motorhome, which was parked at the park, in the 2200 block of Pacific Beach Drive.
Callahan returned with a firearm, but initially fired a shot some 50 feet away and was not close to the hot tub. Abbott told the woman to stay in the hot tub and he started walking to where Callahan was at 10:08 p.m. Callahan fired two more shots, with the last one at Abbott when he was 15 feet away. Abbott was struck in the chest.
Several of Abbott’s adult children spoke and the grandmother of his 10-year-old stepdaughter read her letter to the judge.
