For those of you who follow El Tri Femenil and Liga MX Femenil, the name Maria Sánchez is one that needs no introduction.
The San Diego Wave announced on Saturday it had acquired the 28-year-old native of Nampa, Idaho, who had a stellar collegiate career scoring a combined 79 goals for the Idaho State Bengals from 2014 to 2015 and for the Santa Clara Broncos from 2017 to 2018 before being drafted by the Chicago Stars of the NWSL in 2019.
The Wave acquired Sánchez from her most recent team, the Houston Dash, in exchange for $300,000 in Intra-League transfer funds, $200,000 in allocation money, and an international slot in 2024 and 2025 to the Dash.
Her time in Liga MX Femenil began in December 2019 when Sánchez joined Chivas de Guadalajara on loan for the Clausura 2020 season. At the end of Apertura 2020, it was announced that Sánchez was one of several players who would leave the club. She then signed with Tigres de UANL for 2021 and was an integral part of the team winning the Clausura 2021 championship.
After a loan to the Houston Dash, Sánchez returned helping UANL reach the final. In March of 2021, Houston Dash acquired Sánchez’s NWSL rights from Chicago in exchange for Houston’s second-round pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft. She signed for a month-long loan from Tigres in June 2021 scoring her first goal in the league during the 2–1 win over the Orlando Pride.
On Feb. 26, she helped lead El Tri Femenil to a 2-0 victory over the United States women’s national team in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup, which was the first win for Mexico over the United States since November of 2010.
Sánchez is expected to make her first appearance with the San Diego Wave on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium against Bay FC.
