March in San Diego is about to take on a whole new meaning for art lovers.
Art Gallery Month, a new initiative launching this year, invites the community to step inside the city’s independent galleries to experience, collect, and support the work of living artists. At a time when small businesses and creative spaces are facing economic challenges, this effort highlights the essential role that private galleries play in sustaining the local arts ecosystem.
Unlike museums, which focus on historical and institutional collections, or nonprofits that rely on grants and fundraising, private galleries operate on a different model. They serve as direct conduits between artists and collectors, helping working artists sustain their careers while offering the public an opportunity to bring original artwork into their homes.
The galleries involved in this initiative—Adelman Fine Art, Meyer Fine Art, San Diego Art Advisory, Sparks Gallery, The Studio Door, and Visual Gallery + Design—are uniting to amplify the voices of contemporary artists and encourage meaningful engagement with the arts.
On Saturday, March 15, Art Gallery Month will feature Visit the Gallery Day, where each participating space will host artist talks, live demonstrations, and special exhibitions.
For The Studio Door, this includes its annual Crow Show, a juried exhibition celebrating the crow as a symbol in contemporary art. Meanwhile, Adelman Fine Art will showcase key works from its roster of artists, and Meyer Fine Art will present pieces by iconic figures such as Salvador Dalí and Clay Walker.
“Private galleries are integral in supporting marketing and sales for local artists. Galleries are often founded by those passionate to further the arts, and have a host of support systems for artists, along with connections to art appreciators and collectors,” said Sonya Sparks of Sparks Gallery. “Galleries also market and provide a reach into the art world that artists may not be able to achieve on their own. Galleries often use gallery-only online sales platforms, offsite exhibitions, art fairs, and partnerships with interior designers or corporate clients to bring art to clients while directly supporting working artists.”
For many, stepping into a gallery can be intimidating, but these spaces are designed to be welcoming and accessible. Collectors—whether seasoned or first-time buyers—can connect directly with artists, learning about their creative processes and inspirations. Private galleries. offer a level of connection and understanding that enhances the appreciation of each piece, making art acquisition a more meaningful experience.
The economic pressures facing independent galleries are real. Many of these spaces operate as small businesses, vulnerable to the same financial fluctuations affecting other locally owned shops and cultural institutions. With rising rents and shifting buyer habits, gallery owners are working harder than ever to provide a platform for artists while keeping their doors open to the public.
“Our gallery serves as a dynamic space that bridges San Diego and the global online community with living, active artists.” said Nicole Adelman of Adelman Fine Art. “Through curated exhibitions and events, we strive to make contemporary art more accessible and enriching, contributing to the economic vibrancy of the art world”
Highlighting the personal connections that galleries foster, Kathi Meyer of Meyer Fine Art explained, “We are a small, independent gallery, with a staff of two, my husband and me. It’s well-known with our client base that we provide a very personal gallery experience. As both the owners and curators, we take the time to provide a wealth of art knowledge and stories on our diverse artists; the majority of our artists are not alive, so we speak for them.’”
Art Gallery Month offers San Diegans a chance to experience art in its most visceral form—off the screen and up close. By visiting these spaces, talking with artists, and supporting their work, the public helps ensure that the city’s creative landscape continues to thrive.
