Students and staff at Point Loma High School are mourning the loss of a beloved alum who raised the spirits of everyone at the school during his many years as a substitute teacher.
Don Szalay, class of 1968, became a sought-after fill-in for absent teachers with his unique way of making all students feel valued and capable. His wit brought laughter to learning. He also excelled at regaling students with the school’s rich academic and athletic history from his encyclopedic store of knowledge.
Szalay, 74, died March 26 surrounded by family following bypass surgery.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Z,” Szalay was known for his collection of Hawaiian shirts. Students and staff wore these with PLHS caps last Friday in tribute to Szalay. Later, teachers at an after-school gathering praised Szalay for his efforts to bring out shy and less active students before leaving detailed notes on them for the regular teachers.
A track star himself (CIF silver medalist in the shot put), Szalay could be found after school and evening sports events where he photographed students on his ever-present iPad, later sharing the photos with pictured individuals.
Hundreds of online tributes from current and former students praised Szalay’s skills.
To “gabe_davenport,” Szalay was “a friend and a man who had the biggest heart. He taught us to care, to love, and to appreciate life. He helped me through many challenges and will never be forgotten.”
“Auds” wrote “Mr. Z made everyone’s day when he would walk through the door. He was an educator who genuinely cared about the well-being of all the students he encountered and made our days a little bit brighter.”
“Deanie.woodruff” noted Szalay had “such an incredible life. Mr. Z had a talent for recognizing the gifts that make people unique and encouraging them to embrace what sets them apart. Open-minded, inspiring, loving – he was extraordinary.”
Szalay is survived by his wife Candace of Point Loma, sons Greg, Jonathan, and other relatives.
