Since 2016, the San Diego Convention Center has sold limited-edition chocolate bars to the over 100,000 guests attending Comic-Con. Each year, the convention center offers new flavors inspired by the whimsy and fun of the event.
This year’s four flavors were first developed by Sodexo Live! executive chef Sufi Karaien and pastry chef Kristianna Zabala. Then, the convention center’s communications team tastes the chocolates for inspiration while developing names and themes. The creative trio of Hailey Adams, Grayson Van Loon, and Dylan James then bring the bars to life through designs and animations.
Through this collaboration across teams, they unveiled four new chocolate bars this year: First in Line, Pirate Potion, Sunday Sundae and Moonlight Voyage.
After selling out 5,000 bars last year, the chefs doubled the number of chocolate bars this year with 10,000 expected to be sold over four days at a booth in Lobby 20 for $10 each. To meet this demand, the culinary team makes 100 chocolate bars every 90 minutes inside the onsite kitchen, hand-crafting each one with care during the weeks leading up to the major popular arts event. Each bar is then locally wrapped with designs around the theme of each bar.
In a celebration of early birds getting all the exclusive prizes, the First in Line bar tastes like sugary morning cereal and marshmallows in hot chocolate. The cinnamon-heavy milk chocolate is textured with puffed rice and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

For those who like key lime pie, the Pirate Potion is a delicious twist on this tangy flavor with added tropical ingredients coconut and dried pineapple. The pineapple leaves a particularly pleasing aftertaste to savor in this white chocolate bar.
The savory flavors of Moonlight Voyager are offset by the ultra-sweet white chocolate it’s wrapped in. Miso, black sesame, and dried strawberries made this the best-textured bar this year with a gritty crunch that melts in the mouth.
Before leaving on Sunday, guests should try the Sunday Sundae, with all the nostalgic ingredients making a Sundae packed into one milk chocolate bar: caramel, bananas, strawberries, cherries, vanilla, and peanuts. Not all caramels are created equal and this delicious caramel in the middle layer of the bar should not be missed.

This limited-edition run unfortunately does not include any dark chocolate options, but with new flavors each year, we can hope the same creativity and commitment to the theme will include one such option next year.
For those who partake in this sweet tradition, watch out for golden tickets which will be hidden inside four of the chocolate bars. Each golden ticket can be redeemed for a $100 Starbucks gift card.
