Mission Valley was on high alert yesterday after a brush fire north of Fashion Valley Mall prompted evacuations and the closure of Friars Road.
In total, 15 to 20 acres burned, but no structures were lost, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) and San Diego Police Department (SDPD) responded to the fire as it tore up a hillside above Friars Road, threatening large condos in Linda Vista.
According to SDFD, the fire was called in at 12:09 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Six minutes later, the first crews arrived. The response included 155 personnel, 24 engines and three helicopters.
Swaths of Mission Valley were under evacuation warnings, including Civita and the San Diego Humane Society. For those ordered to evacuate, Snapdragon Stadium served as a temporary gathering point. Evacuations were lifted Tuesday afternoon. The final crews left shortly after midnight.
A fire investigator is looking into the cause of the fire.
The brush fire started as Los Angeles suffers from harrowing, wide-spread fires. Amid Santa Ana winds elevating fire risk, San Diego first responders have quickly fought several fires as they broke out in San Diego County, preventing them from developing into out-of-control blazes.
