Once again promoting a celebration of life, liberty and community, and following their successful inaugural event last year, The La Mesa Juneteenth Foundation will hold its first annual La Mesa Juneteenth Jubilee, taking place Sunday, June 18, noon to 4 p.m. at MacArthur Park, 4900 Memorial Drive in La Mesa.
This event. in partnership with the County of San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce, will honor the history, cultural heritage, and ongoing significance of Juneteenth in commemorating freedom and the fostering of unity among the diverse community.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the historic date of June 19, 1865, when news of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans reached the last remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Lincoln. It symbolizes a monumental milestone in the United States’ journey towards equality and justice for all.
The afternoon-long celebration will feature a wide range of engaging activities and attractions suitable for all ages.
Highlights of this year’s event include:
* Live performances – Enjoy musical performances, soulful rhythms, and lively cultural showcases by artists and performers from the local community, including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Choir, Buki Domingos, and more.
* Speakers – Gain insights from influential speakers who will share their experiences, knowledge, and stories related to African American history, culture, and the significance of Juneteenth. Speakers include Thekima Mayasa and more.
* Art exhibitions – Immerse yourself in the artistic expressions of local African American artists through exhibitions and displays that depict the journey of freedom and resilience.
* Food and refreshments – Delight your taste buds with an array of food and refreshments that reflect the richness of local culinary traditions. Food vendors will include Laine’s Bar-B-Que, Stick’n’Bite, and Smokey & The Brisket.
* Children’s activities – Engage your young ones in a variety of interactive activities, games, and educational workshops that promote understanding, unity, and appreciation for diversity.
* Community Marketplace – Explore a vibrant marketplace featuring local vendors, artisans, and organizations, offering unique products, crafts, and resources that celebrate African heritage.
