Immerse yourself in art on Friday, Nov. 1 with a variety of activities, art exhibitions, workshops, and more from Arts District Liberty Station’s artists. You can check out the full lineup of events aquí and classes aquí with a few highlights below.
· Apt 4 Music will be holding its third Annual Open House from 5-8 p.m., celebrating with community, food, and live music. The event is free and the community is invited to enjoy performances by The Colorful Cats and CC Blues Factory and participate in a jam session.
· Lauren LeVieux welcomes visitors into her studio for a First Friday Art Exhibit titled “Time Away.” Guests are invited to stop by studio 104 in Barrack 16 between 4-7 p.m. to view her latest series of oil paintings.
· Join artist Leslie Pierce for her First Friday Open Studio from 5-8 p.m. Be sure to swing by her studio to check out some of the new art for sale and sign up to hone your creative skills in one of her painting, drawing, and encaustic art classes.
· Join Emerging Artist recipient, Joyce Lien Kushner, and TILTshift Dance en el Free First Friday Dance Class. This month’s class will focus on Beg Modern: Graham Technique and teens and adults of all experience levels are invited to stop by. Guests are encouraged to sign up to secure a space.
· Mockingbird Improv is holding a night full of laughs and improvisations. Starting at 7 p.m., Lyrics & Laughs is a family-friendly show where vocal performances create the basis for improv scenes. At 8:30 p.m. Friday Night Flix kicks off with guests improvising movie scenes, followed by All Hands On Deck!, an improv game show meant for mature audiences, at 10 p.m. RVSP aquí for the show you wish to attend.
· Visions Museum of Textile Art welcomes the community to partake in a Dia de los Muertos crafting event from 5-8 p.m. Visitors are invited to create traditional crafts and add them to the community altar or bring them home.
ARTISTS SHOWCASED
Arts District Liberty Station announced that three of its artists have been chosen to showcase their work at Art San Diego, happening from Nov. 1 to 3. One of the region’s most prestigious contemporary art and design fairs, Art San Diego will be featuring a variety of exhibitions that showcase the thriving art and design landscape of San Diego and beyond. Three Arts District artists including Rosa Barnes, Catherine Carlton, and Colleen Veltz will now have the exclusive opportunity to present their creations at this prestigious event. Other Arts District artists including Lisa E., Ann Golumbuk, and Yahel Yan, will also have booth space at the event.
THE CRAFTER’S RETREAT
Join fellow crafting and DIY enthusiasts for The Crafter’s Retreat! The in-person event, happening from Thursday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is designed for makers of all levels to enjoy a weekend filled with artisan crafting workshops led by skilled artists. With over 200 crafters from beginners to seasoned makers, this retreat offers a chance to connect, learn, and create across various mediums, including fiber art, wood carving, and wax resist. In addition to hands-on crafting, there will be an array of special events and exciting surprises for attendees to enjoy. Tickets include the choice of four premium workshop sessions, a choice of a make-and-take bundle, a swag bag, morning yoga, and sound bath mediation, coordinated lunch and dinner meetups, hosted happy hour, and a sponsored raffle. DANZA MALASHOCK
Calling all dance lovers. Join Danza Malashock for the One Step Closer Koncert, presented by the RootEd Foundation, an organization dedicated to bringing Bharatanatyam to the community. Happening on Nov. 9 from 5-6:30 p.m., this captivating event celebrates Bharatanatyam, a beautiful South Indian dance form, exploring themes of elemental energy, love from a woman’s perspective, and intricate musicality. Following the performance, the community is invited to engage in a Q&A session to learn more about this mesmerizing art form. ZINE WORKSHOP
Get your craft on at a free community Zine Workshop hosted by Arts District Emerging Artist, Gracie Moon, in Central Promenade on the grass near the magnolia trees. Taking place on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1-4 p.m., the community is invited to come out and learn how to make self-published, quickly crafted art books called Zines. Booths will be set up in Central Promenade with materials for drawing, painting, stamping, and collaging, allowing participants to put their unique touch on their Zine. Instructors will also be on-site to teach a variety of Zine building techniques including paper folding, saddle stitching, and more.
CHAI FEST AT POINT LOMA TEA
Nothing screams fall more than a warm cup of spiced tea. Come celebrate the autumn season and immerse yourself in the vibrant, aromatic world of Chai at Chai Fest. Taking place from noon-7 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 10 at Té de Point Loma, Chai Fest offers a two-day tea-tasting extravaganza featuring different types of Chai in seven tea categories. Stop by for expertly crafted pairings of Chai and delectable dishes, creating a complete sensory experience that will awaken your taste buds and warm your heart. Whether you’re a devoted tea enthusiast or just beginning your Chai journey, this event is the perfect way to explore the diverse flavors of this beloved spiced tea. 16.16.16 ART NIGHT
Get ready for a night of art, music, and fun as 16 Arts District artists come together to host 16.16.16, a celebration of the arts. Taking place from 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 16 in Barracks 16, a handful of artists will be showcasing their work, and the community is invited to stop by and meet the creatives. VELTZ Fine Art, Lauren LeVieux Artist Studio, Wendy Hamilton Fine Art, Faces By Miche, Melissa Marquardt Fine Art, Inspirations Gallery, La Galleria, Liz Jardine Studio, Lisa E Fine Art, F!VEart Studio & Gallery, Katerina Husar Lazarova Studio, San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, Deborah Consaul and Leon Okun will all be participating in the festivities.
POLAROID WORKSHOP
Do you want to perfect your Polaroid photography skills? Stop by Emerging Artist, Sean Sarmiento’s studio space in Arts District Liberty Station for an exciting Polaroid Workshop. Dive into the world of instant photography at this workshop taking place on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Sarmiento will teach attendees how to load and use a Polaroid camera like a pro. Participants will team up in small groups, armed with their Polaroid camera, and embark on a creative photo adventure around Liberty Station. With fun prompts to guide their shots, attendees will snap unforgettable memories and get to keep most of the photos. Participants will be asked to donate one Polaroid film photo for a vibrant community photo collage that will showcase everyone’s unique perspective. All supplies will be provided.
RADY CHILDREN’S ICE RINK
Arts District Liberty Station welcomes Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary to celebrate the holiday season with the return of their outdoor ice-skating rink beginning Thursday, Nov. 21, through Jan. 5, 2025. Located in the Central Promenade at Arts District Liberty Station, Rady Children’s Ice Rink is in its 28th year and is a fun, family-friendly way to spend time together, raising funds for the Thriving After Cancer program at the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. The Ice Rink is a hub for joy and inspiration throughout the holiday and will be open Mondays through Sundays from 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
