A group of local youngsters spent an afternoon of their summer vacation throwing, catching, punting, and placekicking footballs as they learned the skills needed to play football from Point Loma High varsity players.
Those varsity voices could be heard throughout the clinic as they encouraged each of the 50 participants, ages 6-13, in the second annual Little Pointers event on the shining green turf at Correia Middle School.
“Nice catch, Steven!” “Way to go, Matt!” “You can do this Frankie!”
Each of the students loved the attention they continually received from the much bigger varsity players. The players, in turn, seemed to remember their earlier lives when they were first learning the game’s skills.
There were stations for each skill, manned by several “instructors” including a chance to test their coordination by jumping over bags and running into and around the “big guys” holding padded bags. No contact or tackling was allowed but plenty of physical activity took place.

Several water breaks were on the schedule as well as simulated games broken up by age level.
Pointer head coach Joel Allen and his staff kept eyes on each area and the school’s athletic trainer was on hand in case anyone suffered an “ouchie.”
