The Grossmont High School Museum is in the process of fundraising and designing two campus murals.
One mural is to celebrate the school’s three Astronauts:
Bill Anders, Class of 1951, Apollo 8 Astronaut and photographer of the iconic 1968
photograph (pictured above) “Earthrise”;
Ellen Ochoa, Class of 1975, Space Shuttle Astronaut and past Johnson Space
Center Director;
Rick Sturckow, Class of 1978, Space Shuttle Astronaut and Flight Commander.
A second mural to honor the school’s two Women Air Force Service Pilots, women
who during WWII flew airplanes from the West Coast to the East Coast from 1942-1944.
(WASPs):
Jean Landis, Class of 1936;
Frances Coughlin, Class of 1938.
To learn more about the amazing lives of these five Foothillers, visit the GHS Museum website at: foothillermuseum.com and browse the Hall of Honor pages.
When Jean died at the age of 104, she left the GHS Museum a generous donation in her estate. The GHS Museum plans to use this donation to help fund the two murals.
However, they welcome donations of any amount to supplement Jean’s donation.
The GHS Educational Foundation supports Grossmont’s students and staff throughout the year in ways large and small through teacher mini-grants, monthly Star Student luncheons and awards, student scholarships, and more.
The GHS Foundation welcomes donations of any amount to help it continue these efforts. You may make an online general donation on its website at: foothillerfoundation.com. Or visit the Foundation’s website to place an order for a commemorative campus tile in one of three sizes. The names of the current Foothiller Founders, Foothiller Friends, and 100th Anniversary tile donors are displayed on the same pages as well as photos of the tile displays on campus. The tile donors are the bedrock of the GHS Endowment Fund with the San Diego Foundation. Help continue to build the fund.
The public is welcome to make donations to fund the two websites, which celebrate countless aspects of Foothiller life, past and present.
Other ways to support the museum are to purchase memorabilia. Visit the Store pages at foothillermuseum.com and select a piece of school history, including commemorative holiday ornaments, over 50 vocal and instrumental music CDs dating to 1949, and football and school life DVDs, one of the school books or booklets, or even a magnet.
To donate any amount online, visit the website’s home page at foothillermuseum.com and use the gold Donate button on the home page. Email the GHS Museum with a note about the purpose of your donation.
