A man who pulled a gun on officers outside the San Diego Harbor Police Department has been sentenced to nine years in state prison.
Eric Jesus Medina, 30, was the only person shot, but it was a scary situation that occurred on April 10, 2022, when he used a call box to speak to a dispatcher, saying he wanted some help at their headquarters at 3380 North Harbor Drive.
The dispatcher asked him what kind of help he needed, but Medina only said thank you. Harbor Police body camera footage showed officers coming outside and then noticed Medina pulling a firearm as he exited his car.
They all told him to drop the firearm, but Medina didn’t do that, so he was shot and wounded. He was arraigned in his hospital bed after recovering from critical injuries.
Medina pleaded guilty to assault upon a police officer with a firearm while on duty. He acknowledged his conduct “presented a serious danger to the public and society,” according to the plea agreement he signed.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Rachel Cano gave Medina credit for 506 days in jail and fined him $670, according to court records. Medina agreed to accept the 9-year term when he pleaded guilty to the assault charge and other counts were dropped.
