Authorities in La Mesa are continuing their investigation into a fatal weekend shooting.
On April 7, at about 12:35 a.m., the La Mesa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call of a single gunshot in the area of Waite Drive and Violet Street, La Mesa.
Responding officers found a vehicle parked in the 7100 block of Waite Drive with a shattered driver’s side window. Officers then discovered an unresponsive male with a gunshot wound to the upper torso sitting in the driver’s seat. Officers immediately rendered first aid until paramedics arrived. Despite their life-saving efforts, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial information gathered by investigators revealed the victim, an adult male in his 40s, was sitting the driver’s seat of a black sedan when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect was wearing a dark colored hoodie and fired a single shot at the victim before fleeing in a dark colored 4-door sedan eastbound on Waite Drive. The relationship between the suspect and the victim is unknown, but investigators do not believe this was a random act of violence. The victim’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the 7100 block of Waite Drive, between Massachusetts Avenue and Violet Street, was closed for several hours but has since re-opened.
