On Oct. 30, the Honorable Judge Enrique Camarena, Jr. visited Kempton Street Literacy Academy in Spring Valley, kicking off the national Red Ribbon Week during an assembly at the school.
Camarena shared a message encouraging students to commit to a healthy, drug-free life as part of realizing their dreams and aspirations.
Students were encouraged to wear red in solidarity with youth across the country, taking a stand against drugs.
The staff at KLA said they are committed to mentoring, guiding, and teaching the school’s youth about the importance of their education and surrounding themselves with positive role models and friends.
This year’s theme for Red Ribbon Week is Be Kind To Your Mind.
Kempton students will be celebrating with a variety of activities all week.
Camarena kicked the week off and the week will conclude with a school-wide Honor Circle assembly, followed by a family reading Friday event where parents and family members are invited to join their children at school to read together.
Judge Camarena touched on his own connection to the week and one of his inspirations, his late father, Kiki Camarena, who was a DEA agent slain by a drug cartel in the 1980’s.
“It is an honor to have Judge Camarena join us for this important week,” said Kempton Street Literacy Academy Principal, Janet Josa. “His own powerful story, both personally and professionally, is an ideal way to encourage and inspire our students and staff. We are grateful for his commitment to our children and community and are fortunate to be a part of continuing Kiki Camarena’s legacy.”
