Scoops recently opened to rave reviews and long lines adding to what is sure to be a popular ice cream stop for tourists and locals at 4944 Newport Ave.
“It’s going amazingly well, we have been busy every day,” said manager Yissel Landin. “I just love the OB crowd, they’re so down-to-earth and very welcoming to us.”
Maybe the reason Scoops is a good fit for OB is because of its roots as a “mom and pop” business that morphed from a yoaundromat to a local ice cream shop, turned franchise. Scoops opened their first shop seven years ago with Ocean Beach becoming the third in the franchise.
“Our ice cream comes from Vanleeuwen, that’s a company based in Brooklyn, N.Y.,” said Landin. “They only make it in small batches, it’s all-natural flavors, and they never use food coloring. I think that’s why our ice cream tastes like it’s homemade.”
The name Vanleeuwen might not fall trippingly from the tongue, but it is the taste that counts and the ice cream they make is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
“My kids are all smiles,” said OB resident, Alyssia Neil, as Eve, 6, Lyla, 3, Jojo, 1, and hubby Phil smiled for the camera while enjoying their first visit to Scoops.
“Vanleeuwen’s vegan ice cream is special too,” said Landin. “They use coconut cream and cashew milk or coconut cream and oat milk, it just depends on which flavors they are making.”
Scoops has all of your ice cream shop favorites like shakes, malts, root beer floats, coffee, and crepes. For those of you who require an extra jolt, try an affogato, which is a scoop of any flavor of ice cream with a shot of espresso poured over it like a dessert.
“We have a new white chocolate raspberry brownie and a blue jasmine passion fruit flavor, which is my personal favorite.”
