The La Jolla Torreys Pop Warner team won the Pee Wee championship Saturday, Oct. 29 over San Carlos in dramatic fashion with a thrilling 31-25 overtime victory at Valhalla High School.
“All the hard work paid off for these football players,” said Torrey coach James (Doc) Dockery.
The Torreys jumped out to an early 19-0 lead highlighted by Christopher White and his 55 yard TD interception return. San Carlos then stormed back and took a 25-19 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Torreys then fought back and tied it up with just under five minutes to go in the game. Facing fourth-and-goal, QB Gervy Alota scrambled and threw a TD pass to Jaden Mangini. San Carlos then appeared to score the go ahead winning TD with a 35 yard run down the sideline on the last play of the game. But the play was nullified by a holding penalty on San Carlos. At the end of regulation the score was deadlocked at 25. The game headed into sudden death overtime with the championship on the line. (Both teams get a shot to score from the 10-yard line until one team wins).
San Carlos received the ball first and was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1/2-yard line. La Jolla then scored on an incredible 10-yard run on first down by Nick Dockery to win the title.
Torreys will be playing a team (TBD) 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Valhalla High School.
