Wendy Kwasny, an artist and resident of La Mesa, has won the Best of Theme Award in the July 2023 San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) Member’s exhibition “Where the Fun Is”, an in-gallery show of the SDWS at 2825 Dewey Road in Liberty Station.
Kwasny’s painting, titled “Joy in a Cupcake”, was selected by prominent local artist Roberta Dyer.
“For this little girl, the fun is right there in her hands,” commented Dyer. “It is beautifully painted, with the figure unapologetically right there in the center, and she makes that composition work. I love the bright fun colors. Her smile is extraordinary. She is just… happy. This speaks to the theme of the painting so well.”
Kwasny is an award-winning artist who earned her BA in Fine Art from San Diego State University, and regularly shows her art at The Ashton Gallery in San Diego. She is currently working out of her home studio. She has also shown her work in venues all over San Diego in the past 25+ years, including at the San Diego Watercolor Society, and has completed numerous commissioned pieces. Painting, and the creative process, really, is part of Kwasny, who works in oil and acrylic portraiture, still life, and landscapes.
She finds that the world can be chaotic place, and painting centers her and brings her to a place of serenity, calm and confidence. She brings that into her work with each brush stroke and careful color consideration, always trying to capture that certain unique something about someone to tell their story in a portrait. The SDWS Gallery Exhibit will run through Saturday July 29 and is free to the public.
Paintings can be viewed and purchased directly from the gallery, and are also available to view and purchase on the SDWS website at: sdws.org/galleryart.php?cat=7019.
