
On March 6, at about 8:33 p.m., the La Mesa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call of a shooting at 8705 Echo Drive in La Mesa. The caller reported that someone had been shot.
Officers located a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Officers immediately rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and the victim was transported to Sharp Memorial, where he was pronounced deceased.
Initial information gathered by investigators revealed the victim, a 35-year-old black male from San Diego, was at a memorial event being held at the location when he was shot by an unknown suspect. The memorial event was concluding when the shooting occurred, and many people fled the scene upon hearing the gunshots.
Investigators are still working to obtain a description of the suspect and to determine how the suspect left the scene immediately following the shooting. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
