Little Italy Association (LIA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the beautification, promotion, and economic development, all while safeguarding the unique cultural heritage of Little Italy in Downtown San Diego, recientemente announced leadership updates for the new year.
In September 2024, the Association’s Board of Directors approved a leadership transition plan, appointing Christopher (Chris) Gomez as the new chief executive administrator of the Association. Gomez succeeds Marco Li Mandri, who transitioned into an executive advisor role effective Jan. 1.
“I am beyond thrilled to be taking on this new position within the Little Italy Association,” said Gomez. “Over the past two decades, I’ve witnessed the profound impact our work has had on the Little Italy community, transforming and shaping the neighborhood we serve. I look forward to applying my experience and knowledge to this new position and continuing to grow and take care of this beloved downtown neighborhood.”
The Little Italy Association of San Diego, established in 1996 under the leadership of Li Mandri, has played a crucial role in revitalizing and driving the economic growth of the northern part of Downtown San Diego.
Over the last three decades, Little Italy has become renowned as the fastest growing and vibrant Italian business districts in the nation as well as one of the city’s premier neighborhoods. It is now home to over 7,500 residents, 125 brick-and-mortar businesses, and over 600 professional services. The Association is embarking on an important new chapter this month.
Gomez, a key management team member of New City America, which has managed the Little Italy Association since 1996, has gained all the necessary expertise to step into this role. Li Mandri, pagsresident of New City America, is not retiring but will instead focus on expanding the company nationwide. After nearly 30 years of establishing close to 100 similar Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Community Benefit Districts, él will concentrate on forming new districts and pursuing additional management contracts for New City America.
Gomez, a native of San Diego, has a background in design, branding, and communications. He has held student leadership roles since his time at San Diego Mesa Community College, including vice president of MEChA, a national organization promoting Chicano unity and empowerment through political action, and various positions in student government throughout his educational career. He also served on the Board of Directors for The San Diego LGBT Center.
Gomez and Li Mandri’s efforts during the pandemic helped Little Italy businesses navigate forced closures and public health updates and were integral in supporting the community during a challenging time. Their work in Little Italy resulted in no restaurant, café, bar, or retail closures during the three years the pandemic restricted public access to Little Italy businesses.
Gomez currently serves as vice president of the BID Alliance, representing 18 business districts in San Diego, and as vice president of the Washington Elementary School Foundation, which supports Downtown San Diego’s oldest elementary school in the heart of Little Italy.
In his new role, Gomez will continue the legacy of Li Mandri and New City America and work closely with the Little Italy Association Board of Directors and the community to ensure the ongoing success and growth of Little Italy as San Diego’s premier neighborhood and cultural district.
Li Mandri will remain as an executive advisor to the six districts New City America currently manages in the state of California and will continue to provide guidance in Little Italy in the coming years.
