It’s hard to pigeonhole the music of Hemisphere (above). A blend of contemporary jazz, pop, and a touch of progressive rock, the band’s music draws fans across genres. Performing at Humphrey’s Backstage Live on Nov. 11 in support of their recent album, “Unity,” Hemisphere has put together a wide-ranging bill for the night. Opening acts include Hawaiian-themed combo, Slack Key Ohana, and award-winning blues singer Whitney Shay, set to debut an acoustic Bowie tribute. All three acts are headliners in their own right, with this bill also a testament to San Diego’s diverse music community.

Amongst upcoming highlights are a new album, Retro Trilogy, and several live projects, including an appearance at the Brazil Jazz Festa on Nov. 19 at Dizzy’s. For this performance at the Athenaeum, Tucker will concentrate on jazz standards, with a few recast 1980s favorites from her new album included. Long-running mid-west rockers REO Speedwagon, still featuring frontman Kevin Cronin, return to Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay on Nov. 13. Formed in 1967, the group hasn’t released an album of original music since 2007’s “Find Your Own Way Home,” currently touring a greatest-hits set. As such, the night will consist solely of REO Speedwagon’s best-known songs, including such standards as “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On The Run.” Longtime fans won’t want to pass up this opportunity to see an old favorite, while newcomers to REO’s sound will find the night’s choice of tunes to be a good introduction.

Classic rock fans will want to check out The Rolling Heartbreakers, who perform at Tio Leo’s on Nov. 17. Mixing the songs of Tom Petty with those of the Rolling Stones, the band casts a wide net on their setlist. All their music is well played, but where The Rolling Heartbreakers excel is with their early 1960s Stones material, with songs like “Paint It Black” and “Get Off Of My Cloud,” performed with real passion. If you like the music of either of the Rolling Heartbreakers namesake groups, you’ll love every second of this show.
The Rolling Heartbreakers: Friday, Nov. 17 at Tio Leo’s, 6333 Mission Gorge Road. 7 p.m. $12. tioleos.com.
Although Moonshine Beach is known as a country music haunt, they do on occasion branch out with their bookings. Such will be the case on Nov. 22 with an appearance from new wave and powerpop era tribute band, The Spazmatics. The band has a comedic angle, dressing in silly “nerd” styled costumes, but they match that with top-notch musicianship. There likely won’t be any line dancing to songs such as Devo’s “Whip It” or Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough,” but for anyone who enjoys 1980s-era music, this concert will be a lot of fun.
The Spazmatics: Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Moonshine Beach 1165 Garnet Avenue. 8 p.m. $10. moonshinebeachsd.com
