While summer breezes by as usual, locals who want to get some cool waves in can do so through one of the area’s better known surf camps, Menehune Surf.
The Menehune Surf School is enjoying its sixth season of operation here in San Diego, giving locals a chance to learn the art of surfing and have fun at the same time.
According to Darren Fulhorst, founder and director of Menehune Surf, the company offers a variety of camp programs that involve learning about all aspects of the ocean, including wave formation, tides, marine life, and surf history and etiquette.
“This coastal education revolves around the activities of surfing, kayaking and snorkeling, and ensures a safe, fun learning environment and camp experience for all the participants,” Fulhorst said.
Camp programs are offered for three to five hours a day, Monday through Friday, and there is also an overnight camp program.
“Our main goal at camp is to provide a fun, safe experience for our campers, and to educate and enthuse our participants through the unforgettable wonder of riding ocean waves ” the ‘stoke’ that is surfing,” Fulhorst continued.
Menehune Surf offers its camps at five locations throughout the San Diego area, from Pacific Beach to Oceanside, and 95 percent of the participants are from local San Diego families, according to Fulhorst.
“Most of our participants at our La Jolla Shores location come from local La Jolla families,” he added.
Fulhorst said most of the camp weeks are still available and open for booking. “We have a unique on-line registration system, and we encourage our local families to call the office or check our Web site for the latest updates in regards to availability and registration,” Fulhorst noted.
“Because we cater to all levels of surfing ability, and have programs ranging from introductory surf camps to competitive surf team training weeks, we have a lot of returning campers from year to year,” Fulhorst continued. “Some have graduated through all levels of the program and enjoy pushing their abilities and competing, while others simply return every summer as a great way of enjoying the surf for a week or two every summer in a non-competitive, informative and fun environment.”
