The Mission Bay field hockey team improved to 9-4 after dominating Olympian High by 3-0 at home on Monday. The Bucs are on a four-game winning streak having given up only one goal during that span, which came in its 2-1 victory over Point Loma on Oct. 2.
“We have five awesome seniors who are really good kids and really tight friends, not to mention they are really good athletes,” said head coach Kris Auer. “Our seniors play midfield and forward and also defend. One of them even filled in for our goalie putting on the gear when we needed her.”
Mission Bay started off the season winning three of its first four games with victories over Eastlake, Bonita Vista, and Otay Ranch. After losing 1-0 matches to La Jolla Country Day and La Jolla High School, the Bucs rebounded with wins over Santana and Granite Hills outscoring those two opponents 11-0 combined. Mission Bay then suffered its third 1-0 defeat of the season, this time at the hands of powerhouse Clairemont, before going on its current run.
“We get to play them again in league at home so that it will be another battle for sure,” Auer said. That match is scheduled for Oct. 19 with Mission Bay playing two more league games before that versus Point Loma on Oct. 12 and Patrick Henry on Oct. 16. The five seniors who are leading the way this season are Daniela Alonzo-Levy, Tayler Henrick, EJ Grohn, Ellie Bauer, and Addi Watson.
“Every season is different,” said Auer. “I don’t like to compare because the senior class is really the driver of what makes this season what it is. They’re super fit, super tough, very positive, and coachable.”
Auer has been coaching for more than 20 years. The Bucs will close out the season with games against Madison on Oct. 23, La Jolla Country Day on Oct. 26 and a road match versus Mira Mesa on Oct. 30.
