The Mission Bay flag football team was eliminated from postseason contention on Nov. 15 on the road 22-6 against Westview in the quarterfinal round. The game came three days after Mission Bay defeated Lincoln in a dramatic 32-28 home victory during the opening playoff round.

The Bucs were without the services of star senior quarterback Mary Reger, who suffered a torn ACL in the game against Lincoln, which made an upset over the higher-seeded Westview all the more daunting.
“She’s one of the best quarterbacks out there,” said head coach Heather Nellis. “She has every tool that you need as a quarterback.”
Reger’s replacement, freshman Mia Siqueiros, gave a valiant effort coming in as quarterback by making some big plays at crucial points, including a touchdown pass, to keep Mission Bay within striking distance.
On the defensive side, it was junior Alegra Camacho who came up with huge plays along with her two interceptions to end potential scoring drives for Westview. Another notable standout was freshman Valerie Young who had four sacks and a touchdown reception. Young was coming off a two-sack and multiple touchdowns performance where she also sealed the win with a game-ending interception versus Lincoln.
“Not only is she a superstar on offense, but she is just so gifted,” Nellis added. “(Young) was a superstar in the game as well. She just started last year and never played before.”
Mission Bay won the league title by going undefeated (8-0) in the regular season despite having only one senior on the roster and has made the postseason in each of its first two years.
“I expect a championship next season,” said Nellis. “I’m going to have a stacked group of seniors and there’s a lot of new talent coming in. I expect to win the league again, but I expect to win the CIF.”
Mission Bay was expected to play in Div. III but we got moved up to Div. II because of its wins during the season. The league is based on student population with the playoff divisions based on MaxPreps standings.
