La carrera de 17 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will make its annual visit to “America’s Finest City” on Saturday, Jan. 20, where Estadio boca de dragón will host Round 3 of a landmark 2024 season.
This year’s championship carries greater significance as the sport has reached its milestone 50th anniversary, during which the San Diego stop will serve as the series’ official event of this golden celebration with the “50th Anniversary Race.”
With a legacy that dates back to 1980, San Diego has served as a pillar of the sport of Supercross for decades, producing its own homegrown talent that includes AMA Hall of Famers Broc Glover, Rick Johnson, and Ron Lechien, who comprised the legendary “El Cajon Zone” as well as the “King of Supercross” Jeremy McGrath, who has been a longtime resident of Encinitas, and current elite racer Christian Craig, also from El Cajon.
The indoor and outdoor seasons of the SuperMotocross World Championship series consist of 17 Supercross races and 11 Pro Motocross races, providing 28 rounds of racing building towards the 2024 SuperMotocross Playoffs and World Championship Final.
The San Diego Supercross will serve as the first of two SuperMotocross rounds in the county, as the 2024 Pro Motocross Championship will kick off over the Memorial Day holiday weekend from Pala’s Fox Raceway.
The 17-race 2024 Supercross schedule will visit 16 different cities spread across 13 states from California and Arizona to Alabama and Pennsylvania. New to the schedule this season are stops to Oracle Park in San Francisco, Calif., Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
The biggest stars in the sport will be on the starting gate in January. Four past champions – Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb, Eli Tomac, and Chase Sexton – will fight for another title while Germany’s Ken Roczen, France’s Dylan Ferrandis, as well as Americans Adam Cianciarulo, Justin Barcia, Aaron Plessinger, Malcolm Stewart, and El Cajon native cristian craig, all compete for their first championship title.
Not making it easy on anyone will be Australian rookie sensation Jett Lawrence, fresh off an undefeated Pro Motocross season and inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship title.
In the spirit of the 50th Anniversary Race competitors are encouraged to embrace all five decades of the sport, which means racers will be adorned in throwback colors that defined Supercross’ most infamous eras.
Additionally, the race bikes will feature retro designs of the most iconic motorcycles of the past half century. It’s an all-encompassing celebration that includes the fans, as passionate followers of all ages are also encouraged to immerse themselves in the nostalgia. It’s a memorable occasion to celebrate the sport’s unique fandom that will only happen once.
Following a sellout crowd for the Supercross debut at Snapdragon Stadium one year ago, San Diego’s newest venue is expected to be at capacity once again.
While the on-track action will bring the fireworks and excitement, the day-long pit festival known as FanFest will give attendees the opportunity to immersive themselves into the world of Monster Energy Supercross, providing unprecedented access with a behind-the-scenes look as teams and athletes prepare, practice, and qualify for the Main Event. Spectators can also take photos, visit sponsor displays, and purchase their favorite gear.
