San Diego State has transitioned to an “Omni CMS calendar” platform to centralize and promote campus-affiliated events.
“For years, our community has asked for a more simplified and centralized way to locate information about the thousands of events hosted each year. This is that solution,” said La Monica Everett-Haynes, SDSU associate vice president and chief communications officer.
“It supports the very social and community engagement efforts across our campus that help people to feel connected and welcome and to find places to share ideas.”
Student organizations had previously been advertising their events through social media posts, flyers, word-of-mouth, and tabling. With more than 300 recognized student organizations, however, it is easy for events to get lost in the masses.
Due to this, many student leaders believe the unified space the Omni Calendar provides will benefit their organizations.
“The centralized calendar wouldn’t just benefit our organization, but also the wide scope of the SDSU student organizations that could use more promotion,” commented Randall Hild, president of the SDSU Musician’s Club.
“Something like this [calendar] could give us even more exposure and grow our audience as well as our general body, which could then lead to even more events,” added Jaime Martinez, the president of the Aztec Music Group.
The Omni calendar will also be beneficial for The Daily Aztec, SDSU’s independent student newspaper, which covers events, news and student life on campus.
“In the perspective of a publication, this Omni Calendar can help student journalists discover new clubs and partake in events for a story assignment – whether it is for The Daily Aztec or a writing class,” said Daesha Gear, the editor-in-chief at the Daily Aztec. “Overall, I think this new feature is a great way for some SDSU brands to receive visibility.”
Students also emphasized the enhancement the Omni Calendar would have on campus life by making it easier for students to find activities that align with their interests and schedules.
“For a lot of freshmen, there is a major bombardment of so many student organizations that are trying to make a strong first impression the first few weeks of school…a centralized calendar may make the search for student organizations much easier,” said Hild.
