UCPG pledges opposition to airport Prop A
The University Community Planning Group (UCPG), led by chair Linda Colley, voted Tuesday, Oct. 10, to continue to support the Marines at Miramar Air Station and endorse and concur with the Community Planning Group’s (CPC) decision to oppose Proposition A on the Nov. 7 ballot.
The proposition asks voters whether they think the airport authority should take over 3,000 acres of MCAS Miramar to use as a commercial airport by 2020.
Colley attended a conference held Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Balboa Park, at which State Rep. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) addressed the structure of the San Diego Community Airport Authority and asked for public comments on the issue.
The CPC voted 19-5 to oppose Proposition A, and Colley learned at the conference that although community planning boards cannot take a position on political candidates, they may take a group position on ballot propositions.
Twelve of the 17-member UCPG board were in favor of supporting the CPC’s opposed position to Proposition A.
City to stop mailing planners’ agendas

The monthly meeting agendas for the University Community Planning Group and the La Jolla Community Planning Association are posted on the city’s Web site.
The department can also send the agendas to interested persons via e-mail.
To receive the monthly notice, e-mail the city at [email protected] and indicate which community planning group agenda you would like to receive.

REI boosts Rose Canyon education, conservation
A $5,000 grant will boost activities in Rose Canyon, such as nature walks, restoration programs, Boy Scout projects and wildlife viewings.
REI, a major chain specializing in outdoor equipment, with a store on Copley Drive, awarded the grant to Friends of Rose Canyon.
The retail store gave out six other similar grants to other organizations in San Diego this year.
The money went to Rose Canyon because “it’s one of the only remaining greenbelt areas that stretches across the city of San Diego,” said Jim Peirce, supervisor at the Copley Drive REI store.
REI chooses its grant recipients from organizations that REI employees volunteer with. REI sent work parties to pull invasive plants from Rose Canyon on three occasions this year.
“They sent 35 people in April. In two hours, they did an amazing amount of restoration work,” said Debby Knight of Friends of Rose Canyon. “They got rid of invasive honeysuckle that might have taken a year to get rid of.”
Knight said that funds will largely go toward outreach, recruiting new members, creating a brochure and supporting the nature walks.
The nonprofit will also show rescued animals that live in Rose Canyon but are too frail to be released.
“They’re kind of adopting Rose Canyon,” Knight said of REI.
