The rumors of Snapdragon Stadium hosting this year’s National Women’s Soccer League Championship match scheduled for Nov. 11 were made official on Wednesday morning.
“We are extremely proud and honored to have been selected to host the 2023 NWSL Championship game,” said San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis. “This gives us another significant opportunity to welcome the world’s game to San Diego.”
The 2022 NWSL final was held at Audi Field, home of the 2021 champion Washington Spirit, where the Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current 2-0 after defeating the San Diego Wave 2-1 in the semifinals.
“We’re thrilled to have San Diego Wave FC as our host for this season’s championship match,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “With top-notch facilities, a passionate soccer community, and a favorable coastal climate, San Diego sets the perfect stage for our marquee event.”
The Wave, led by head coach Casey Stoney, is in sixth-place holding the last playoff spot with 21 points after 15 matches, two points ahead of both Racing Louisville and Orlando Pride.
“We could not be prouder of our fans for embracing our club and creating the passionate atmosphere that is giving us the opportunity to bring this event to Snapdragon Stadium,” said Ellis.
The Wave will play at home on Friday, July 21 versus the Portland Thorns in UKG Challenge Cup play. Five San Diego Wave players are currently representing their respective national teams in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which starts tomorrow, July 20.
