San Diego Wave will face OL Reign on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in the semifinals hoping to earn a trip to the NWSL championship in only its second year.
After winning the Supporters’ Shield thanks to its 2-0 victory over Racing Louisville in the regular season finale on Oct. 15, San Diego earned a bye for the quarterfinal round. The team, led by head coach Casey Stoney, finished as the top seed with a win over Louisville and Angel City defeating Portland 5-1, thus knocking the Thorns down to the second seed.
The match on Sunday will also feature two legends of the United States women’s national team with Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan facing each other one last time as rivals. Rapinoe announced in early July that she would be retiring from professional soccer at the end of the season after 14 years with a career that began playing for the Chicago Red Stars.
The two have played in four World Cups each, with their most recent ending in the quarterfinal round versus Sweden on penalty kicks. They both helped lead the USWNT to World Cup championships in the 2015 tournament held in Canada and 2019 when it was held in France. Rapinoe also won the Golden Boot for top-scorer and Golden Ball for best player climaxing with the 2-0 USWNT victory over the Netherlands at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
The last time Morgan and Rapinoe faced each other as rivals was on April 15 in a 1-0 victory for OL Reign at Lumen Field with Rapinoe coming on as substitute in the second half. San Diego Wave will be looking for its first win against OL Reign, which made it to the semifinals after a 1-0 home victory over Angel City on Oct. 20.
