With the 2024 year winding down, it is worth noting the continued activity of the Optimist Club of Allied Gardens in the community.
As a Club, ellos participate in the following activities in the Allied Gardens area:
The EAR Reading Program at Foster Elementary School – A program to help second grade students advance their reading skills so that they can pass the reading test to move on to the third grade. As a Club, we have been participating in this program for more than 10 years. All of the students we have worked with to improve their reading skills have been able to move on to the third grade.
Foster Elementary School – In addition to the EAR program, we donated the materials and the labor to build the Reading Tree bench in the school patio about twenty years ago and maintain the bench when repairs are required. We also recently helped in the Foster Halloween Carnival with the Foster PTA and at the end of the school year fifth grade picnic.
The Optimist International Essay Contest – A program sponsored by the Optimist International Foundation to award a College, University or Trade School scholarship to local students. The program awards a $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000 college scholarship at the local (San Diego County) level and advances the winning student to the regional and international contests with the possibility of winning an additional advanced educational international scholarship prize of $15,000. The entry deadline for this contest is Feb. 10. Applications are available at the OIF website address en: https://optimist.org/member/scholarships3.cfm.
