A Point Loma High School teacher has received an award from a state group identifying top educators.
Ben Abada (above), director of instrumental music at the school, was the recipient of the 2023 Fortissimo Award for New Teachers from the California Music Education Association, Southern Border Section (CMEA-SBS).
The award is presented to music educators in Imperial and San Diego counties for exceptional work in music education.
Laura Schiavo, past president of CMEA-SBS, says this award is “an amazing way to celebrate all the incredible people who are working tirelessly, daily, to make music education incredible in our community.”
Abada was presented the award last month by current South Border Section president Emma Schopler during a group event at Stone Brewing in Liberty Station.
Music offerings at PLHS include jazz band, concert band, Vanguard marching band, color guard, orchestra, guitar, and choir. No prior experience is needed to join these groups.
