With spring sports well underway, Pointer athletes are helping drive no less than four teams near the top of local prep rankings.
Both baseball and softball teams are ranked No. 1 in CIF Div. II rankings.
Coach Rigo Ledezma’s baseball team, ranked third in the county overall, is hitting .285 overall, far above the previous year’s teams, as they have posted a 10-3 record. Phoenix Brant leads the team in batting average (.378), Runs (15), Hits (17), Triples (2), RBIs (13), and home runs (3). Druw Frost hit his second home run last week while Hunter Redegg and Michael Hall hit their first.
The pitching staff sports a fine 1.85 ERA led by Matthew Garrison, Ace Selchow, Hunter Weller, Wyatt Olson, and Landon Moore, all of whom have yet to give up an earned run. Garrison last pitched on March 19 and has been kept inactive by both tendinitis and illness, but still leads the group with 23 strikeouts.
In Garrison’s absence, several underclass teammates have stepped in to perform well and give the team further depth, including Weller, Johnny Bowes, Luc Chatelain, and Moore.
In softball, coach Billy Hunyady’s girls sit at 15-3-1 and are ranked seventh overall in the county, hitting a robust .330 as a team. Team leaders are Ryoko Schroth (.465), Siena Balistreri (.450), Nanako Schroth (.413), Avery MacPherson (.411), and Annika Isaacson (.400).
Nanako Schroth and Balistreri lead with six doubles, and Balistreri has half of the team’s triples (three).
Then there is the long ball. Isaacson and Ella Poulin have each clubbed five homers, followed by Ryoko Schroth and Leyton MacPherson with three each, while Balistreri and Avery MacPherson are tied with a pair.
On the mound, Ryoko Schroth has a 5-1 record with a 3.06 ERA, Poulin is 7-2 (3.06), and River Hargett is 3-0 (2.39).
In boys lacrosse, coach Deron Ambler is pursuing a repeat of last year’s CIF championship with his current team that has put up an 8-3 record to date. Two of their losses were by one goal. The Pointers have scored 107 goals and given up 51.
The team is ranked ninth in local CIF polls and eighth in Div. I.
Senior members include Canon Ogden, Kirby Jackson, Connor Haffey, and Bryce Graulich.
The Pointers play in the Western League with Cathedral Catholic, Coronado, La Jolla, Patrick Henry, Scripps Ranch, and St. Augustine.
Last year’s team finished 17-3, so the Pointers were moved from the Eastern League to the more challenging Western League.
Also highly ranked is the girls’ beach volleyball team, listed as sixth best in the San Diego Section. A relatively new sport, the team is on a four-match winning streak.
With an overall record of 7-4, the team has won five of its matches by 5-0 scores.
