The Point Loma Pointers dropped a bombshell on local prep baseball circles when they announced on Sunday they have hired 2023 National High School Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year Rigo Ledezma to lead their baseball program.
Ledezma was also named county co-coach of the year by the San Diego Padres in 2022 and last season led his Santana High Sultans to the San Diego CIF Div. I baseball championship and the state finals.
In fact, Ledezma’s team knocked the Pointers out of that tournament with a 3-1 victory at the Santana field where his team used the techniques he taught to get runners on base and then rattle the nerves of defenders into making critical errors that score runs.

“Having dedicated over a decade of his life to Santana High School’s baseball program,” said Manny Diaz Jr., PLHS athletic director. “Coach Ledezma comes to us with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion. Over the past 22 years, he not only honed his coaching skills but also spent a remarkable decade as their head baseball coach.”
“In welcoming Ledezma, we are not just embracing a mentor who knows the game inside out, but one who truly believes in unlocking the potential of every young player, guiding them towards becoming outstanding ball players and even greater human beings,” Diaz added.
Ledezma will begin building his coaching staff immediately once he is officially hired. Moving forward players and families will hear directly from Ledezma about the next steps he has planned for the program.
“We will be announcing a date and time for the baseball community to meet Ledezma in the very near future,” Diaz said.
