A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 27 for the man accused of shooting two men he worked with while they were visiting a hotel in Mission Valley on March 3.
The three men were together from the Los Angeles area and attorneys have not said in court what happened that sparked the shooting which left one man dead and another injured.
Kevin Casey Larin, 29, of Northridge, has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault with a handgun in San Diego Superior Court. He remains in the South Bay Detention Facility without bail.
Damian Martinez, 19, of El Monte, died from a gunshot and was found in a hallway at the Handlery Hotel, located at 950 Hotel Circle North. He was on a work trip with Larin.
Found wounded in the upper torso was Bailey Lorenzano, 23. He was also on the work trip. The charge involving Lorenzano says he suffered great bodily injury.
Police said Larin was seen getting inside a F-150 truck, and they later found him. He was arrested without incident.
Martinez’s aunt placed a GoFundMe request for donations for funeral expenses. She wrote her nephew “had the most beautiful smile that could light up a whole room.”
“My nephew had just graduated to be an electrician and was a very hard worker who had a whole life ahead of him,” wrote Beatriz Zepeda. “He leaves behind a grieving mother, father and younger brother. We have lost an amazing person who was robbed the opportunity of a bright future.”
