PACIFIC BEACH — Mike Chase, a Pacific Beach native and owner of Kono’s Coffee, spends his days at the beach making coffee creations that have been on the menu for 20 years, while taking in views of the ocean. He has owned the popular coffee stand located on the deck behind Kono’s Café, 704 Garnet Ave., since 1999. “I have the best job with the best view,” Chase said. The most surprising thing about Chase is that he does not have a coffee maker at home. His caffeine routine consists of drinking a double espresso every morning, after he has arrived at work. The shop only closes during heavy rains, which is not often. Kono’s Coffee is open every day — holidays included — even at times when Kono’s Cafe is not open. When he first purchased the business, he went in on Thanksgiving to make some improvements. To his surprise he turned away more than 100 people who thought the business was already open. He decided that day that he would remain open on holidays. Chase enjoys living in Pacific Beach because it offers great proximity to everything from shopping to bars and restaurants, he said.
