The Tony Award’s Best Musical in 2023, “Kimberly Akimbo,” is the first of several shows having their local premiere during Broadway San Diego’s 47th Season at the Civic Theatre. The at turns heart breaking and funny “Kimberly Akimbo” is the only show occurring in 2024, with the rest expected in 2025.
Selections for the season elevated new, popular musicals, such as the comedic season closer “Shucked” scheduled for Aug., 2025. For those unaware of the viral, country music show, some of the most awarded country songwriters ever, Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark with a book from Disney Channel famous Robert Horn, turned their attention to a fictional rural town whose livelihood depends on America’s favorite food: corn.

Still, much of the material will be familiar to audiences outside of the Broadway stage even if the musicals are new.
Winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical “Back to the Future: The Musical” based on the cinematic classic and “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” which is also a 2001 film, are slated to touch down in San Diego. The retooled classic musical “Some Like It Hot!” is another film turned stage production debuting to San Diego audiences next year. The reverse is happening for “Wicked,” the most popular musical in this city, which is going to have a four week engagement here starting in Feb. 2025, just a few months after the new “Wicked” film is released this November.
Audiences can also hear the familiar tunes of Neil Diamond in the 47th season in the biographical musical about the American singer-songwriter named after his 1976 album “A Beautiful Noise.”
“Each year, we have the great privilege of presenting the best in national touring Broadway shows in San Diego and this year is no exception,” said Vanessa Ybarra Davis, Vice President of Broadway San Diego. “With much of our season currently playing on Broadway or new shows just beginning their national tours, the distance between Broadway and San Diego is now closer than ever.”
Broadway San Diego’s Season Ticket Packages start at $328 for seven shows. All tickets are mobile and can be accessed through the Broadway San Diego App, available for download on https://www.broadwaysd.com/mobile-app/.
