Our next meeting will be May 5, and we will be joining the Grantville/Allied Gardens Community Council at the Benjamin Library, 5188 Zion Avenue. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. This will be the first time SCAC will be attending their meeting, I look forward to seeing you there! (No coffee at this event… sorry.)
As you know, we voted to merge several local councils into one “Council” and are trying different scenarios to see what works and if it will even work. We share common streets, walls, events, customs, shops, and interests with our 92120 neighbors.
Each morning, I make myself a cup of decaffeinated coffee and sit down to read the newspaper. I am overwhelmed by all that is happening in our country and the world.
After I have read the paper, I try to de-stress by playing a few hands of solitaire at the game room table. (I win about 85% of the time.) Then I go upstairs and start my day. While I officially retired in July 2024, and I must say I am never lacking anything to do as I now volunteer my time even more than before.
For those that really know me, you know my passions are to do service to the community, stay connected to charity events, write, and spend time in and about the various theatres, community and professional. When you do what you love and are around people with like-minds, it is fun.
Theatre … I am loyal to many, and I know when my passion started; I was about seven, at the Pomona Fair in Los Angeles with my best (unrelated) friend Pat with her mom and Dad. I was chosen out of the audience to do a commercial (Western Holly, queen of the western ranges.)
At that time, I was very shy but doing the commercial I managed to get some really soulful laughs. They were not sympathy laughs but they were clever and timing laughs. That did it; I was hooked.
As years went by, I took theatre classes and learned that in theatre it is the only place you learn to really listen to and see others. You have to listen and watch for many reasons. Being with Pat was my happy place (and still is) and being with family and in the theatrical settings are my happy places.
So, when this old world starts getting me down, that is where I go.
I love the “Fine Arts” defined as creative disciplines focused on aesthetic expression and the creation of works appreciated for their beauty and emotional power (including visual, performing and applied arts). Some of the finest works of art have been celebrated for centuries, books, stories that tell us we are not alone, remind us that we can overcome adversity, give us hope for a better world.
I encourage each of you everyday to find your silly: words, dance (style or not), singing (on key or not), painting, writing, crocheting, sports (?) or …
