San Diego FC earned its third consecutive victory and climbed to second place in the Western Conference standings after an impressive 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday at Snapdragon Stadium.
SDFC almost scored in the first couple of minutes when forward Hirving Lozano took a shot from 20 yards out that goalkeeper Zack Steffen deflected with his right shoulder out of danger.
The home team took the lead in the 33rd minute on a corner kick executed by forward Anders Dreyer that found the head of teammate Jeppe Tverskov, who then flicked it backward toward defender Chris McVey who headed the ball into the net from point-blank range.

San Diego FC extended the lead in the 58th minute when Dreyer streaked down the pitch and took a shot that hit the post but bounced back and he then left-footed the ball in the top corner for the 2-0 lead.
Colorado almost tied the game in the 73rd minute on a penalty-kick attempt by midfielder Djordje Mihailovic after a handball inside the box was called on defender Willy Kumado moments earlier. But goalkeeper CJ dos Santos was up to the task by diving to his left to deflect the shot away.
SDFC then managed to minimize any further chances for Colorado and took the three points, which was also the second clean sheet in the last three matches for dos Santos.
“It’s a massive performance from the boys,” said head coach Mikey Varas. “This exact moment right now, we can’t let this feeling slip, because we get a taste of what it can be.”
San Diego will have little time to enjoy this win as its next game is sobre Saturday at home against Sporting Kansas City.
