San Diego Loyal SC will play Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga in a much-anticipated exhibition match on Thursday, July 27 at Snapdragon Stadium.
It will be the first game for the team, led by head coach Nate Miller, at the home of NWSL side San Diego Wave FC with San Diego Loyal playing its USL Championship home games at the University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium.
The German first-division opponent on Thursday finished in second place in the Bundesliga standings last season after a heart-wrenching 2-2 draw against FSV Mainz in the final match held on May 27 while Bayern Munich came out with a 2-1 victory over FC Köln to clinch the title thanks to a better goal differential.
San Diego Loyal currently sits in fifth place of the western conference standings tied with the Oakland Roots at 30 points each but with San Diego having played one less match. The Loyal is coming off back-to-back wins outscoring its opponents 7-0 during that stretch including a 5-0 victory over the Colorado Switchbacks on July 14.
USMNT midfielder Giovanni Reyna leads Borussia Dortmund and is coming off three-straight wins in club friendlies starting with a 7-0 blowout over SV Westfalia Rhynern on July 12, a 3-2 win over RW Oberhausen on July 19, and a 2-1 victory over Erfurt on July 22 with another friendly coming on July 30 versus Manchester United.
After the game against Borussia Dortmund, the Loyal will return to its regular season schedule with a match versus the Colorado Switchbacks on July 30 at Torero Stadium.
