San Diego Wave will try to rebound from its recent 2-0 defeat to Club América at Snapdragon Stadium on July 26 when it travels to take on Angel City on Thursday night. San Diego is in third place of the Group B standings in the inaugural NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup needing to win by a minimum of two goals and hope that Club América doesn’t defeat Bay FC.
That combination of results would see the Wave finish on top of the group and have a chance at making the semifinals.
The first-of-its-kind tournament consists of 30 group stage matches followed by a four-team semifinal round on Aug. 6 at CPKC Stadium, home of the Kansas City Current. The championship game will take place at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 25.
This NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup kicked off on July 19 and features all 14 NWSL clubs along with the six teams that earned the most points during the Liga MX Femenil 2023 Clausura and Apertura, which were Tigres UANL, Club América, Chivas de Guadalajara, Rayadas de Monterrey, Pachuca, and Tijuana.
San Diego defeated Bay FC 3-1 at Torero Stadium on July 20 to open tournament play, but will still be without several key international players who are representing their respective national teams in the Olympic Games being held in France. The Wave will return to NWSL competition on Aug. 24 at Snapdragon Stadium with a rematch versus Angel City FC.
